If you’re wondering how to get speaking gigs then this will help you get started with your speaking engagements.
You’ve probably read several articles about how to get booked as a speaker but they didn’t give you the real information. The articles only told you things like:
-write a one page
-make a good bio
-have a good website
-make sure you have a good presentation
After reading articles like that, you still ask yourself, “Ok, how do I get the gig?” There’s nothing wrong with having a good website, having videos of speaking gigs, but how do you actually get booked as a speaker? What are the specific things you need to do to get someone to hire you for a keynote?
Here are some things you can do to actually get the speaking engagements:
Google’s Pay-Per-Click is one of the fastest ways to get speaking engagements but it can also be expensive (especially if you don’t know what to do). When someone types in “Los Angeles Motivational Speaker,” then you want to come up on Google and PPC will do that for you.
The person booking a speaker will then be able to go to your website and if your website is good, they will be drooling over your amazing videos and decide to hire you.
The Steady Flow Gigs website gives you examples of PPC campaigns that can help you get booked.
If you don’t have a big budget for marketing then SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the way to go . It takes time, but that’s the trade off. There are tons of things you can do to get good rankings for SEO but it all comes down to backlinks (when someone links to your website). With backlinks, they have to be diverse and getting your website shared on social networks helps a lot too.
This website allows you to set alerts (like Google Alerts) for certain keywords.
With this in mind, you can set alerts for events like conferences, events, etc and it will email you when it finds pages on the internet that talks about conferences, events, etc. When you get this email, you can contact the person in charge of the event to see if they need a really good speaker for their conference (then send them to your website).
Since Twitter posts are public, when you post to Twitter and include hashtags like #conference #keynotespeaker etc, people are more likely to see your post and watch the video that you posted with it. Your demo video should then drive them to your website where they drool over your other videos and want to hire you.
5. Call Speaker Bureaus
An easy way to start getting speaking engagements is to just google “Speaker Bureau” and start contacting them. It’s best to call them first, then send an email to your website. You can also hire someone to do this for you. They will be your sales team with the specific job of contact event planners, meeting planners, and speaker bureaus to get you listed on their sites.
DMCs (Destination Management Companies) are similar to event planners but they’re usually on a bigger scale. When a company from China is having an event abroad, they usually contact a DMC to plan everything. So if you contact DMCs and get listed with them, they will recommend you when a big company is looking for a speaker for their conference.
7. Lead Attraction Methods
It’s one thing to go to clients and get booked but it’s another to get them to come to you. You should always be thinking of ways to get people to come to you rather than you having to go to them.
If you’re a magician and you go on Americas Got Talent, then your visibility increases and you start getting calls for bookings. If you’re a speaker and you get on stage with Tony Robbins then you’re much more likely to get calls about speaking on other people’s stages. If you’re on TV speaking about your topic, you’re much more likely to draw in the buyers who want to hire you.
Always think of ways to get clients to come to you.
8. Referral Method
Referrals are the number one way you will book speaking gigs. Unfortunately, most speakers leave this to chance but you should always be thinking of ways to maximize your best lead generation tool. How do you do this?
When you’re speaking at an event, hire someone to go around and network. The person you hire will go around and talk to people while getting video testimonials. They will build relationships with people during the times that you can’t (maybe because you’re on stage, etc). Don’t just have this person get video testimonials, make sure they chat with people about upcoming events and build relationships. This is one of the most effective ways to get booked.
Those are 8 things you can do to get speaking gigs. You also need to make sure you have all your promo materials in order but once you’re finished with all that, it’s time to get the gigs.
